In fact, the mass transport in pervaporation process is permeate through a dense membrane or the top layer of a composite membrane, and it’s usually described in terms of solution-diffusion model, where the effect of porous layer is usually considered to be negligible. Ideally, the support layer should not interfere with the mass transport and only serve to increase the mechanical strength of the membrane. However, several studies have demonstrated that the support layer can have significant effect on pervaporation.
