Preparation of block copolymers that possess both the driving force for self-assembly (i.e. amphiphilicity) as well as latent functionality for post-assembly crosslinking and functionalization is an area of continuing interest in materials science. Several methods of living or controlled radical polymerization have been used to prepare well-defined block copolymers, including atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), nitroxide mediated radical polymerization (NMRP), and reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT). Significant recent attention has been focused on RAFT due to the wide variety of monomers that are polymerizable and the relatively easy syntheses of both small molecule, and macromolecular RAFT agents.
