Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resin is a rubber-toughened thermoplastic polymer. The fundamental components of ABS resin were acrylonitrile (AN), styrene (ST) and butadiene (BD), and the microstructure of ABS resin was the so called "sea-island" two phases, i.e. dispersed rubbery polybutadiene (PB) phase distributed over rigid poly(ST-co-AN) (SAN) continuous phase [1]. ABS resins were prepared mainly by the so called "emulsion grafting and blending method", i.e. by blending ABS grafting copolymer (PB-g-SAN) with matrix AN-ST copolymer (m-SAN) [2]. Of which, PB-g-SAN was prepared by batch seeded emulsion grafting copolymerization of AN and ST using PB particles as seeds, and AN-ST copolymer (g-SAN) grafting onto the surface of PB particles to achieve the necessary interaction with the SAN matrix; m-SAN was prepared by free-radical mass polymerization of AN and ST. Usually, PB particles were ca. 300 nm obtained by batch emulsion polymerization.
