N-methylol acrylamide (NMA) containing polymers are prepared by emulsion copolymerization with other vinyl monomers. They are widely used in applications such as binders for nonwoven fabrics, adhesives, latex paints and protective coatings.The use of NMA in small amounts (3 ?7 wt % of the copolymer) results in "self -cross- linkable latexes" which form films with increased tensile strength, impact resistance, abrasion resistance, peel strength, water, detergent, alkali and solvent resistance. However, due to the new EU regulations and worldwide chemical safety awarness, there is a high demand for formaldehyde free crosslinkers in the textile industry (Table 1).
