Preparation and Characterization of a Novel Carboxymethyl Chitosan Hydrogel for Drug Controlled Release

Hydrogels are soft and wet materials, which have the three-dimensional networks composed of polymer backbone and water. In recent years, practical interest had be devoted to the hyrogel in controlled release applications because of their good biocomatibility , the ease with which the drugs are dispersed in the matrix and the high degree of control achieved by selecting the physical and chemical properties of the polymer network1 Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCTS) is chitosan derivative, which was reported that is non-toxic, either in vitro in fibroblast culture assays or in vivo in testing with intraperitoneal, oral, or subcutaneous treatments2. It has resported that carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogel was prepared with glutaraldehyde as the crosslinking agent3 However, the inherent toxicity of the glutaraldehyde restricts its application in drug delivery system. Dialdehyde starch (DAS) is a polymeric aldehyde obtained by the reaction of starch with periodic acid, which has shown low toxicity to rats by oral, dermal, and respiratory routes of introduction.
