Synthesis of organometallic polymers has attracted much attention among scientists because of their potential applications in data storage and superconducting systems. Among organometallic molecules, ferrocene is probably the most widely studied species because of its ready availability, high stability, unique structure and redox activity. Thermal ring-opening polymerizations of silaferrrocenophanes yield poly(ferrocenylenesilene)s, which have found to show an array of novel properties and can serve as processable polymer precursors to magnetic ceramics. Polyacetylene is the best-known conjugated polymer. A wide variety of polyacetylenes bearing different functional pendant groups have been synthesized. Organometallic polyacetylenes have, however, rarely been prepared. The difficulty is mainly due to the metallic species of the monomers, which are often hard to prepare and generally toxic to the catalysts used in acetylene polymerizations. Moreover, such polymers usually have low processability, which limits the scope of their practical applications.
