Multivalent phenomenon, and in particular protein-carbohydrate interactions, are an integral component of human disease -4 For example, in the earliest phase of bacterial infections, pathogens adhere to the human host cells through lectin-mediated oligosaccharide- directed binding events. In investigations aimed at controlling these and other protein-saccharide-mediate binding events, there have been a variety of glycopolymers synthesized via chemical strategies. The synthesis of glycopolypeptides via solid phase and protein engineering methods, however, allows improved control over the scaffold backbone as well as both the number and spacing of saccharides on a scaffold, which will permit the structure-based design of polymers for inhibition of the multivalent binding event.
