Metal-containing polymers exhibit rich potential and much of the early work in the area in the 1950’s and 1960’s targeted polymetallocenes. However, most of the attempted polymer syntheses utilized polycondensation reactions involving inefficient coupling methodologies or impure difunctional monomers. As would be expected, such step growth processes led to the generation of poorly-defined, low molecular weight oligomeric materials (M_n < ca. 3,000) of correspondingly low processability and which were often also insoluble and poorly-characterized.
