Matrix-assisted desorption/ionization was independently introduced in 1981 by Barber and Liu and coworkers.1,2 The addition of the laser as the energy source was introduced by Tanaka,Hillenkamp and coworkers3,4 in 1988. This combination of concepts allowed the creation of matrix-assisted laser/ desorption mass spectroscopy,MALDI MS.
