Nylon thermoplastic resins are used in a wide variety of engineering applications due to their balance of desirable properties. In particular,nylon 6,6 polymers are characterized by strength,stiffness,toughness,chemical resistance,heat resistance,and ease of processing.1,2 However,more demanding applications require improved toughness,defined here as resistance to crack propagation,2- 7 especially at lower temperatures.1,2,4,8 While impact resistance can be achieved with high glass loadings,this approach sacrifices elongation and ductile properties,causing sharp edges to form when parts break. In contrast,the discovery of impact-modified nylon resins broadened the scope of possible applications9 and created new opportunities in markets as diverse as sporting goods,consumer electronics,and transportation.
