Diabetes mellitus (including Type II or Type I) has been known to cause microvascular disease such as retinopathy and neuropathy. However, there is no any cure for diabetes. To have a prolong life, it will be the best way to detect and control a proper glucose level from the blood or metabolite of diabetics. In this respect, development of glucose- responsive polymeric materials must play an important role to provide the capability of chemosensor to detect a blood sugar level. It has been well known that boronic acid groups can act as an interesting and powerful receptor because of their binding saccharides by covalent interactions resulting in the formation of cyclic phenylboronic acid esters. Recent successful synthesis of ‘smart’ polymer carrying phenylboronic acid group has also been reported to monitor the saccharide level.
