Polyelectrolyte complexes, formed by self-assembly of cationic polymers with DNA, were developed widely as vectors for gene delivery1. In this case plasmid DNA within polyelectrolyte shell is protected from degradation by serum nucleases. This property is useful for transfection into cells. It was desirable to produce polyelectrolyte complexes with a neutral charge, and with hydrophilic corona. For this purpose both random copolymers containing cationic groups together with hydrophilic groups and di-block-copolymers, where the first block is polycation, and the second – hydrophilic block were synthesized. The random copolymer was the copolymer of cationic monomer TMAEM (2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride) with different amount of N-(2-hydroxypropyl) metacrylamide (HPMA).
