The alternate deposition of polyanions and polycations on solid surfaces leads to the formation of films called Polyelectrolyte Multilayers(1). These films have received considerable attention over the last years due to their widespread applications in fields ranging from biomaterials up to nanofiltration. Polyelectrolyte multilayers can also be used to create stimuli responsive films. Up to now the most investigated stimuli are temperature, pH, ionic strength. Here we describe a new type of responsive films based on polyelectrolyte multilayers and that respond to stretching(2,3,4).
