Carboxymethyl chitosan and quaternized chitosan were widely studied for its structure and properties[1-4], but reports on the interaction and effect of carboxymethyl group and quaternary ammonium group contemporaneously introduced onto chitosan molecular chain were less. Amphoteric copolymers, containing both anionic and cationic groups along the macromolecular backbone, have a similar structure as biopolymer (protein, nucleic acid, etc.) and superior biocompatibility. Enlightened by the study[5] in which a series of water-soluble amphoteric cellulose derivatives were prepared by quaternary ammonium cationization of carboxymethylcellulose in aqueous sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide by using 3-chloro- 2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride as the cationic monomer in isopropanol-water mixture, we successfully prepared quartenized carboxymethyl chitosan(CMQ). The effect of CMQ on the human cervical carcinoma HeLa cells was also studied.
