Vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymers (EVA) are produced via conventional emulsion polymerization in which the ability to incorporate Et is limited, not by the reactivity ratios (which are both close to unity), but by mass transfer resistance in bringing the monomer from the gas phase to the locus of polymerization. In this study, it is proposed to produce EVA copolymers via miniemulsion polymerization with the goal of increasing the Et content, since it is believed that there is little monomer transfer involved in miniemulsion polymerization.
