Confinement of Diblock Copolymers in Submicro-Patterns for Hierarchically Ordered Nanostructures

A diblock copolymer composed of two immiscible polymers spontaneously forms the self-assembled periodic nanoscale domains. Depending on the molecular weight and composition of copolymers, various ordered domains such as spheres, cylinders, and lamellae as well as bicontinuous gyroids can exist. The bulk block copolymers, however, these domains are oriented randomly and long-range ordered structures cannot be obtained without external forces. To achieve ordered periodic structures over large area, confinement into topographic patterns can be employed. In physically confined environment, structural frustration and interfacial interactions can strongly influence the molecular organization of diblock copolymers, leading to unusual morphologies which can not be achieved in bulk.
