Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) can be drawn from the molten state using its higher melt viscosity. It has been reported that the extended-chain and lamellar crystals were developed during melt-drawing. Consistent with such morphologies, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed double endotherms, corresponding to the meltings of extended-chain and lamellar crystals. The resultant mechanical properties of ultra-oriented melt-drawn samples exhibited the excellent tensile modulus and strength, reflecting the effective extended-chain crystallization during melt-drawing.
