We have evaluated two different augmented reality navigational maps in see-through head-worn displays, targeted at a walking user in an urban environment. The maps are overlaid on the real world view. The user's current position is continuously shown on the screen by the means of a GPS receiver. The maps are based on the familiar 2D bird's eye view; one version is oriented automatically whenever the user turns his or her bead, whereas the other version is oriented manually. We wanted to see which of the two approaches is better for a targeted search task. The user evaluation showed that there are no significant differences between the two methods. It is more important to take into account the personal liking and disliking of the user, and provide the user with both methods.
