The alloy Ti25V15Cr2A10.2C(wt%) has been developed as a burn-resistant Ti alloy and as such it has potential for blade tipping. The technique of laser deposition has been used to build up solid material from the powdered alloy on Ti6A14V substrates. The present work is concerned mainly with assessing the microstructure of laser-deposited samples of this alloy after deposition. The mechanical properties of this alloy are controlled by the presence of TiC precipitates, which control grain growth during conventional thermo-mechanical processing and which also getter the matrix alloy of oxygen. Hence one of the microstructural features which has been assessed in some detail is the distribution of the TiC precipitates formed after laser deposition.
