BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN THE RURAL FARM POPULATION AND POLICY AUTHORITIES FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE IN NIGERIA

In Nigeria, bad governance affects both the real and social sectors adversely. In regard to agriculture, the effect of several years of bad governance are pronounced in terms of absolute non participation of the farm population in the process of formulating governance policies affecting the sector as well as complete lack of financial and program accountability to the generality of the people. These problems reflect over the year in the poor performance of agriculture itself and the poor growth of the general economy at large. Crisis of poverty and misery is evident in the rural areas and a squalor culture has spread beyond the sphere of mere environmental degradation to take the dimension of fear, danger, insecurity and accidental death in our urban landscape. Thus, this paper presents a novel mechanism for improving farmer participation in policy formulation and advocacy in Nigeria. By laying this foundation, sustained development will then assume a continues and dynamic character.
