The international cooperation centre in agronomic research for development (CIRAD)

This paper outlines the structure and mission of CIRAD, focusing on activities in the Depart, ment of Animal Production and Veterinary Medicine (EMVT) related to control of Newcastle disease (ND). In Senegal, NDcauses losses of 60 percent to 90 percent of birds in small-scale poultry systems (estimated population 12 million chickens) especially between the months of February and May. Both live (HB1. La Sota, Clone 30) and inactivated (Imopest, Ita New, Newcavac Nobilis, Pestaviform) vaccines are available. To date on small-scale farms, inactivated oil adjuvant vaccine has been preferred as time other ND vaccines are only available in large dose format and require a cold chain. The 1-2 ND vaccine is to be produced at ISRA-LNERV. The CIRAD program in Zimbabwe is working with the Department of Veterinary Services and the EU to find solutions to time problem of ND.
