This paper proposes an adaptive location management scheme based on the location relationship between a mobile terminal and its respective neighborhood for Private Network to Network Interface (PNNI)-based wireless ATM networks. The proposed adaptive location management scheme adopts different location management methods for home and foreign neighborhoods in a hierarchical wireless ATM network architecture based on a PNNI. The proposed adaptive mobile tracking scheme uses dynamic user-location information based on the movement patterns of a mobile terminal. Also, an effective mobile locating scheme is proposed using the location relationship between the calling party, the called party, and the home neighborhood. When compared with the existing LR (location registers) scheme, the numerical results show that the proposed adaptive location management scheme requires a much lower total mobile locating cost.
