A facile synthesis for derivatizing fullerenes with diphosphonate groups based on the Bingel reaction has been explored. One monoadduct and five different bisadduct isomers of C_(60) with tetraethylmethylenediphosphonate have been synthesized and characterized by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and ~(31)P{~1H} and ~(13)C NMR spectroscopy. Hydrolysis of the bisadducts generate diphosphonic acids that can be converted to water-soluble Na~+ salts for future in vitro and in vivo studies in which mineralized bone tissue will be targeted.
