Electrabel n.v. and Ondernemingen Jan De Nul n.v. plan the development of a large offshore windfarm in the Belgian part of the North Sea. The windfarm will be situated north of a sandbank called the 'Vlakte van de Raan', close to the Belgian-Dutch border, approximately 15 km off the coast of Knokke-Heist. The windfarm will be built in phases, starting with a pilot project of about 20 MW and can grow to about 400 MW in the longer term. In this ultimate configuration, the windfarm will represent an annual energy output of about 1,2 TWh/year or approximately 1.5% of the yearly electricity consumption in Belgium.
