The Federal government spends over one billion dollars each year painting and repaining aircraft.Currently,almost all aluminum used on aircraft is chromate conversion provides effective corrosion resistance.It is then painted an epoxy paint containing chromate.Unfortunately,chromium is very toxic and is 17th on the EPA's list of most hazardous materials and targeted for elimination from the workplace.Therefore,it is imperative that non-chromate be developed for transfer to the U.S.aircraft industry in the very near future.
