Cu-Zn-Pb bearing complex ore rejects obtained from Saragipali, Orissa is roasted in both static bed and fluidized bed reactors to extract copper and zinc selectively. The ore rejects containing 17.7% Cu, 9.4% Zn, 11% Pb and 17.4% Fe has been roasted in 25 g scale in static bed reactor and in 200 g scale in bubbling fluidized bed reactor of 50 mm ID. In static bed experiments the temperature is varied between 773 K and 1023 K; for fluidized bed the variation is between 923 K and 1023 K. An extraction of 68-70% Cu and 53-66% Zn could be achieved in static bed whereas 90% Cu and 98% Zn could be extracted in fluidized bed roasting. XRD study has been carried out to identify different phases in raw as well as roasted material and the data indicates formation of ferrites at higher temperatures. Efforts have also been made to replace electrical energy by solid fuel in fluidized bed roasting.
