The principal nitrogen oxides emitted from combustion devices are nitric oxide (NO), nitrogne dioxide (NO_2), collectively referred to as NO)_x, and nitrous oxide (N_2O). Because of detrimental effects of nitrogen oxides on he environment and on health, nitrogen oxide emissions from combustin sources are regulated in most industrialized countries. A variety of techniques for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions have been developed. the concepts underlying many of these emissions reduction techniques can be understood in terms of the reaction mechanisms for formation and removal of nitrogen oxides in combustion.
