The paper deals with the description of an innovative pump design to reduce the flow ripple of an axial piston pump. The new system operates with an elastic ring which realises a pressure depending cross-sectional area between a high pressure ring groove and the cylinder chamber. Starting with an analysis of requirements in function, load, geometry and assembly, a constructive design of the ring system was done developing an FE-model of the ring and numerical simulation models of the pump. Using simulation models reduces time and cost intensive investigations on the test rig. To prove the efficiency in reducing pulsation, shown in the numerical calculations, an axial piston pump was modified. The measured values of pulsation conform to the calculated ones. Depending on the operating point, a reduction of the pressure ripple is possible in a range between 5 and 60 %.
