Curved transfer chute - results of site trials and optimization

For many years Tunra Bulk Solids has been offering advice on design of transfer chutes and many other aspects of plant design at a conceptual level. A project at a local coal preparation plant was tendered and won to provide detailed conceptual drawings for several transfer points, a first for our group who normally provides concepts only. This provided us with the opportunity to understand some of the resistance and problems with curved transfer chutes in industry. Whilst there are a number of papers published about optimal transfer chute designs incorporating parabolic and multi-radius trajectories it was found that most fabricators had difficulty with single radius curves in a fabricated chute. Although the first installation eventually worked satisfactorily, design refinements and stricter quality assurance lead to a much better unit being installed in the second, and finally the third transfer points. This paper looks only at the first and third transfers.
