The purpose of the hydraulic surge protection analysis is to advise, discuss and to design a project in order to be sure that in any event, even in an accidental situation, the stresses experienced by the system remain in the acceptable range (max pressure, mm pressure, frequency of the vibrations, radial or axial movements of the pipe relative to itself or to the civil engineering parts). In an engineering team, it is more and more the job of specialists to propose solutions. They perform numerical simulations using specific software. This debate must take place during the preliminary design of the project in order to determine how the transients will be managed as a general philosophy, and in the final design as well, in order to size an accurate, pertinent and optimised solution. The mechanical behaviour of each device needs to be investigated in order to predict the steady state as well as the unsteady state.
