This paper is a collection of case studies in the use of non-intrusive continuous corrosion monitoring sensors at Equinor's Kalundborg refinery. The application of this technology started in the Visbreaker Unit - with 45 sensors - due to a specific corrosion issue because of a wrong design of a new unit - in 2013. The corrosion monitoring technology was later extended to other parts of the refinery, deploying another 50 sensors. The case studies demonstrate that the data delivered from the corrosion monitoring system has enabled: optimisation of the operating window for crude selection (TAN/sulphur levels); an understanding of neutraliser and filmer performance - including automated alarming of poor corrosion inhibition performance. detection, understanding and control of hydrochloric acid/ammonium chloride corrosion in hydrofiner unit. optimisation of chloride trapping technology, including successful validation of performance (corrosion rate completely controlled) of a new kind of chloride trap. In all cases, the ease of system installation, the quality and frequency of the data delivered to desk and the flexibility to use and expand the system in-house has resulted in an improvement to refinery performance in terms of safety, reliability, availability and ultimately profitability. Lessons learned and suggestions for those who are interested in adopting non-intrusive corrosion monitoring systems to improve their plant performance are also given.
