Flood management will remain to be one of high priorities in water management. Ever increasing flood damages call for further advances in the understanding of flood generation processes and their modelling, flood impacts, and in designing and implementing flood management measures. Further advances are needed in flood forecasting, in order to further increase lead times for emergency measures of flood management. This objective should be supported by technological innovations including the remote sensing of meteorological data, weather forecast modelling, GIS databases and information technology tools. Future structural measures should focus on extensive measures serving to reduce flood risk potential over large areas. An emerging issue, requiring further research, is the impact of climate change on floods. Finally, in the planning of flood management, floods should be considered within the catchment ecosystem, with clear understanding of connections among the various system components and implications of flood management measures.
