Drought resistance can be divided into dehydration avoidance or postponement and dehydration tolerance. A form of extreme dehydration tolerance is when a plant or plant organ can survive equilibration with 0-5percent relative humidity after air-drying and resume "normal" physiological functions upon rehydration. Such tolerance occurs at the cellular level and is termed desiccation tolerance. Several desiccations tolerant systems have been studied, these include seeds, mosses and a small number of angiosperms termed resurrection plants (Gaff, 1971).
