Facing the example of aviation, there will be a regulation for vessels to be equipped with data recording devices. The International Maritime Organization, IMO, has already developed and published standards for the performance of such devices called Voyage Data Recorders, and determined time limits for their installations. Causes of accidents, which could not be found by traditional evidence like documents or statements made by witnesses, shall now be established through electronic storage and reproduction media. This storage medium enables the preservation of evidence and the trace ability of events and activities concerning all systems involved in a vessel's operation.
