The cost of high-purity deionized water is a concern for facilities around the world. For example, the tap water supplied to a semiconductor manufacturer in Kirkop, Malta, contains dissolved solids (approx 1,500 mg/L) and is expensive because of the limited volume available to the small island (approx 140 mi~2). The tap water must be purified before it can be used in the manufacturing process. A complete high-purity water recycling system integrating several technologies was installed in the spring of 1998. The system uses metal-scavenging electrowinning, reverse osmosis and ion exchange technologies to recycle the water from leadframe plating machines. More than 5 meg ohm water is produced by the system. The facility's water consumption has been reduced from 27.5 million gallons/year to less than 11.7 million gallons/year.
