UPDATE ON FDA'S CURRENT PRIORITIES: IDENTIFICATION OF RESEARCH NEEDS RELATING TO SALMONELLA ENTERITIDIS CONTAMINATION OF EGGS

The safety of shell eggs continues to be important to FDA. Working toward decreasing the number of egg associated Salmonella enteritidis (SE) cases remains a goal of FDA. In an effort to achieve this goal, FDA is currently in the process of developingan SE research plan. The primary goal of this research plan is to identify areas of further research need, relating to SE in eggs, and development of projects to address these needs. A preliminary search of the literature indicated several processes inthe contamination of eggs by SE that are not fully understood. FDA has identified several of these areas as those needing to be investigated further.
