A proposal for quality metrics in the design process

Engineering companies are finding it increasingly important to address the quality of their design processes. Techniques to aid in the identification and elimination of potential errors and inefficiencies in the transfer of design knowledge, data and procedures would be beneficial. It is contended that we may learn from methods applied in the domains of quality management and manufacturing in this respect. This paper commences with an explanation of the need for quality improvement in the design process and highlights the key areas where errors and inefficiencies typically occur in design and development. It goes on to overview several approaches for design process quality improvement.
