APRS: A Nationwide RF- and Internet-based Location System Designed for Public Service and Emergency Applications

The Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS) is an RF- and Internet-based location system used primarily in the amateur radio service. However, the system can be implemented on any voice grade communications medium. The system disseminates the position and other relevant information of network users via VHF and HF radio links, as well as TCP/IP connections. Currently, APRS useage is expanding worldwide, with heavy concentrations of network users in the United States, Canada and Europe. This paper presents an overview of the APRS network and system architecture. The paper also describes the data message content as well as software and equipment requirements. Field results from emergency situations and public service events are also presented.
