The functionality of radar-based driver warning system, allowing detection of obstacles as far as 150m away under all weather conditions, ranges from the simple adaptive cruise control up to full collision detection system. Infineon Technologies offers a cost-effective second-generation radar front end based on pure planar technology for volume supply. The 77GHz chip set consists of three-different GaAs MMICs (77GHz VCO, 77GHz driver, 15GHz harmonic mixer), a double-balanced 77GHz Si-diode mixer, and finally a DRO. The matching signal processing device is a TriCore-based DSP-microcontroller. The core combines a RISC engine, with microcontroller-typical fast real time response and DSP signal processing power. It eliminates one device in the system and largely simplifies the ECU architecture. The development tools have been tuned to automotive needs and directly support the different development steps of the classic V-cycle, from modelling to calibration, substantially shortening the development cycle.
