Electronic commerce (ecommerce) incorporates any business activity undertaken using electronic communication. It includes commercial internet use, electronic data interchange, EFTPOS and electronic banking. It extends beyond purely commercial transactions and incorporates the collection, collation and transmission of information relevant to commercial activity. It covers business to consumer, business to business, business to government and within business interactions. Ecommerce has already changedthe nature and dynamics of supply relationships and will continue to do so. These changes have included the trend toward supplying consumers directly through business to consumer activities (B2C), such as through electronic banking, and the growth of large business to business networks (B2B). The development of business to business networks (B2B) has the greatest implications for supply chains within the food industry.
