Market implications: Genetically modified crops

Gene technology has delivered a range of useful improvements to agricultural production systems but consumer concerns are leading to the emergence of some market access restrictions for these products. The current generation of crop innovations without market access restrictions is estimated to have lowered coarse grain and oilseed prices by around 4 per cent and benefited grain consumers by around USS6 billion annually (in 2000 dollars). However, this analysis suggests that market access restrictions leading to increased grain segregation requirements would probably mean the price benefits are largely eliminated.
