Multilateral trade negotiations aimed at reducing distortions to agricultural markets globally are underway. These, and negotiations on services are proceeding despite the failure of the World Trade Organisation ministerial meeting in Seattle to launch an integrated round of multi lateral trade negotiations covering a range of sectors and issues. Liberalisation from such negotiations has the potential to raise incomes globally. Halving the level of agricultural support, for example, could increase global incomes around USS48 billion (in 1995 dollars).
