Reform and competition:microeconomic reform and competition policy

Two major reports on national competition policy (NCP) have been released in recent months. The Productivity Commission published its report on the Impact of Competition Policy Reforms on Regional and Rural Australia in September 1999. And earlier this month, the Senate Select Committee on the Socio-Economic Consequences of NCP released its findings. The reports share a good deal of common ground. In particular, they emphasise that many parts of rural and regional Australia have suffered a cumulation of socioeconomic traumas in recent decades.
