Methodology for Estimating the Impact of Metrology in the Manufacturing Industry: Case Study of an Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturer

The Metrology has a great participation within the productive processes of the industry in general but mainly in the automotive industry. One of the great challenges of metrology is to demonstrate quantitatively its contribution within the productive processes, especially when talking about innovation and generating value in the product or service. Measuring the impact of the way in which Metrology generates improvement both in the productive processes, as well as in the product itself, is one of the great pending issues of the metrology itself. This document shows the results of the study of the impacts of Metrology in the value chain of the automotive industry, through the application of a methodological model, which brings together several tools already recognized for the assessment and diagnosis of complex systems, such as they can be: Participatory Causal Matrix, or Matrices of Incidence, Fuzzy Logic and Forgotten Effects. The methodological model allows identifying the value-generating variables (VGV) of each link in the chain, as well as evaluating their links or connections through the chain itself, showing how Metrology affects the generation of value in each link and thereby it shows how this incidence of Metrology increases within the value chain itself.
