A Novel Ruthenium Cyanide Complex for Optical Sensing

The spectroscopic properties of transition metal complexes make them good candidates for optical sensors. We have developed a coordination complex of ruthenium(II) that changes its visible spectra as a function of local environment. The coordinating ligands to the ruthenium(II) center are cyanide and dipyridophenazine; the cyanides impart solvatochromic behavior, while the coordinated dipyridophenazine functions as a "luminescent light switch" for nonaqueous local environments. The complex was synthesized according to a photochemical protocol, purified by high pressure liquid chromatography, and characterized spectroscopically and by mass spectrometry.
