The effect of a supporting laser beam of comparatively low power on a conventional TIG arc was investigated by means of arc diagnostics and welding experiments. The arc enhanced with laser powers between 100 and 1500W is changing it's operating mode and therefore offering a number of technological benefits like HF-free ignition [6], increased energy density and increased stability. Especially for low currents, high welding speeds and long arc lengths, where conventional TIG welding fails, new processing opportunities occur.
