CAE Electronics has provided National Power of the United Kingdom with a new tool for their training program. The Transportable Power System Simulator (TPSS) replicates a large thermal power station's electrical distribution system connected to an infinite grid via a 400 kV and a 132 kV switchyard. National Power needed a power system simulator to allow operators to carry out switching exercises. The particularity of the simulator is that the hardware is moved around various power plants in three rugged flight packing cases on wheels. The basic idea, behind the concept is to bring the simulator to the power plant and let the people in the power stations manage the training around their work patterns with the support of National Power's training group. The hardware adopted to realize the TPSS consists of a simulation host computer SGI/02 R10000 workstation featuring the MIPS R10000 RISC microprocessor with a complete 64-bit environment and two SGI 02/R5000 workstations with MIPS RISC R5000PC CPU for the trainee stations. The simulation computer also serves as the instructor station. Each workstation is equipped with a 21-inch monitor and runs under the IRIX 6.3 operating system. CAE used the Real-time Object-oriented Simulation Environment (ROSE?) as the, baseline software development and validation tool for this project. ROSE is employed to generate and validate, in an object-based graphics environment, the high fidelity models for the generator and electrical systems. The simulator was ready for training (RFT) 4 months after contract award.
