Effect of moisture environment on mechanical properties of carbon fiber laminates

This study deals with the influence of moisture environment on mechanical properties of carbon fiber laminates. It also clarifies the effect of unit-ply thickness and fiber orientation of free surface of carbon fiber laminates immersed in distilled water of 80 for a certain period of time on the mechanical properties such as interlamina shear strength (ILSS), bending strength and fracture toughness. As a results, it is found that the weight gain of water increases with immersion time and the interlamina shear strength, bending strength and fracture toughness decrease with the weight gain of water. And it is also shown that the mechanical properties decrease the increase of unit-ply thickness through immersion time. The interlamina shear strength, bending strength and fracture toughness are affected by the fiber orientation of tree surface in the laminates. Mechanical properties of carbon fiber fabric laminates are lower than unidirectional cross laminates through immersion time.
