Regular FEM-based flow simulations are optimised for flows where boundary conditions are far apart from each other. When high velocity gradients are encountered between boundary conditions in close proximity, as in the case of particle laden convective flows, these simulations struggle as the curvature of the flow field varies too much over a short distance. We show how an FEM with second order base functions for the velocity can be enhanced to support higher order curvature in the flow field so that numerical instabilities are suppressed.
