The Three Gorges Project (TGP) on the Yangtze River is the largest multipurpose water conservancy project ever built in China as well as in the world. The TGP will benefit mainly in flood control, power generation and navigation improvement. The main structures of the project consist of three parts: dam, power plants and navigation facilities. The total static estimate of TGP is 90.09 billion RMB Yuan. With a total duration of 17 years, the construction of the project is divided into three stages. The stage I construction has been completed successfully in 1997 while the stage II construction is undergoing now. The main conclusions of environmental impact indicate that TGP will exert both positive & negative impacts on environmental & ecological system. The environmental issues will not affect the feasibility of TGP. The total population to be resettled world be over 1.1 million. This is the most difficult task and should be deal with very cautiously. The huge scale project is involved with complicated scientific and technical issues. The following series of technical problems, such as sediment issues, river closure and deep water cofferdam, high slope stability, extremely high intensity of concrete placement, large turbine generating units, are discussed in this paper.
